A Walk At Dusk

A 48-hour game jam piece I made with Yiwen Dai at the GettyJam in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, on 27–28 February 2016. It took second place.

2016 Games Table

A lone figure in a red cloak stands beside a large boulder in a misty, leafless landscape at dusk.

The jam’s challenge: the typical museum visitor looks at a single work of art for less than 30 seconds. Take one work on display at the Getty Center and make a playful experience that helps people discover something they would miss in that half minute.

We chose Caspar David Friedrich’s A Walk at Dusk (1835), a painting about the divinity of nature and a meditation on mortality, with echoes of Schelling’s eternal cycle of life and death in nature. Our approach: interpret the meaning of the painting, rebuild a version of its landscape, and convey the meaning through the mechanics.

The result is more of an ambient experience than a game, a mobile piece that anyone in the museum can play on an Android phone.
